About Dick Stockton

 

Dick Stockton is a coach for Olde Providence Tennis Academy and has returned to the club where he finished runner-up in the 1974 Carolinas International Tennis Tournament that ran from 1971-1977 and was part of the World Championship Tennis Circuit. Champions of this tournament, which was held at Julian J. Clark Tennis Stadium on the grounds of the Olde Providence Racquet Club, include legends such as Ken Rosewall, Arthur Ashe, and Tony Roche.

He won 8 career singles titles, and 16 doubles titles during his illustrious career, reached the semifinals of both Wimbledon and Roland Garros, and twice reached the quarterfinals of the US Open. Coach Stockton peaked at world no. 8 in 1977.

During his career, he logged wins against players such as Jimmy Connors, Arthur Ashe, John McEnroe, Bjorn Borg, and Ilie Nastase, and he played on the US Davis Cup team 5 times. In 1986, Coach Stockton retired from professional tennis.

​

Prior to his professional career, Coach Stockton put together a legendary career at Trinity College where he was a four-time All-American (1969-1972), NCAA Doubles runner-up (1971), NCAA Singles Champion (1972), and part of the NCAA Team Championship (1972).

​

Following his playing career, Coach Stockton remained active in the sport through coaching, as a tennis director, and creating a foundation that uses the sport of tennis to give back to service men and women and their families, among other tennis-related positions.
